The Democratic Party together with the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Presidential Office has announced a plan to pass a special law to strengthen essential medical services and to address regional medical disparities, as well as a law for training local doctors, by the end of this regular session of the National Assembly.

Lee Su-jin, a Democratic Party secretary of the National Assembly’s Health and Welfare Committee, stated this morning (the 4th) after the first party-government consultation in the health and welfare sector held at the National Assembly Members’ Office Building.

Lee expressed concerns about the return rate of residents to hospitals, noting that “It is indeed worrying that the return rate to local training hospitals for essential departments like pediatrics is low.” She emphasized that consensus was reached to pass the Essential Medical Services Act and the Local Doctors Act within the regular session to prevent such issues from occurring again.

She further mentioned that “residents have requested improvements in training environments,” and discussed the importance of creating educational environments that support residents in receiving proper training, emphasizing their desire for quality training.

Additionally, Lee conveyed plans to prepare patient protection laws such as the basic patient law and the patient safety law through government amendments to enhance patient safety, which has been compromised amidst government and medical community conflicts.
