Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the People Power Party, resigned on the 16th, 146 days after being elected. On the day of his resignation announcement, he wore a tie featuring “Yongbieocheonga,” known as the first work written in Hunminjeongeum. This tie was previously worn by Han when he became the Minister of Justice in May 2022 and garnered attention at that time as well.
During a press conference at the National Assembly, Han stated, “The Supreme Council has collapsed due to resignations, making it impossible for me to carry out my duties as party leader,” and announced his resignation from the leadership position.
The “Yongbieocheonga” is a work praising the founding of the Joseon Dynasty. In political circles, it can sometimes be used to satirize those who express unconditional support for the regime. Last October, Han dined with pro-Han lawmakers and met with district chairpersons to expand his influence both within and outside the legislature. During one of these meetings, some attendees reportedly mentioned their intention not to engage in blind praise, saying, “We will not do Yongbieocheonga.”
In his resignation statement, Han said, “The People Power Party, with its leader and lawmakers, stood at the forefront with the people to prevent the illegal martial law of the president our party produced. We upheld the constitution and democracy,” and added, “I believe that is the true spirit of conservatism and the spirit of the People Power Party that I love.”
