Starting Tomorrow: Voting at 182 Overseas Locations for 6 Days
Voter Increase of 14% Compared to Last Presidential Election, ‘Washington Correspondent Min Byung-ki, Beijing Correspondent Park Se-hee’,
,
, ‘Overseas voting for the June 3 presidential election will be held for six days starting on the 20th (local time). A total of 258,254 overseas voters have been confirmed through advance applications, marking a 14.2% increase compared to the last presidential election. This election is being held due to the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, resulting in a shortened registration period for voters compared to the usual presidential elections held every five years.’,
,
, ‘According to the National Election Commission on the 19th, the number of overseas voters for the election starting on the 20th is more than 100,000 higher compared to the 147,989 voters in last year’s parliamentary elections. The Asian region accounts for nearly half with 128,932 voters, followed by 75,607 in the Americas and 43,906 in Europe. Overseas voting will take place at 182 locations worldwide, excluding six locations in countries like Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Yemen, where normal voting is virtually impossible due to war or conflict.’,
,
, ‘For regular elections due to term expiration, voter registration is accepted from 150 to 60 days before the election day, a period of 91 days. However, for elections due to a vacancy, registration only occurs from the occurrence of the event leading to the election until 40 days before the election day, significantly reducing the registration period for this presidential vote. The application period from the day of the impeachment announcement to 40 days before the election was only 20 days. One overseas Korean commented, “It feels like there was much less guidance on voter registration compared to previous years.” An election commission official explained, “There might be a feeling that the guidance was reduced because the time from the confirmation of the election due to impeachment to the election day was shorter than usual.”’,
,
, ‘In the United States, voting will be conducted at 14 locations, including the embassy in Washington D.C., consulates general in New York and Los Angeles, and four additional branch offices. Jo Hyun-dong, the South Korean Ambassador to the U.S., is also expected to vote at a polling station set up in Virginia on the first day of the overseas election on the morning of the 20th. In China, voting will occur in 10 locations, including the South Korean Embassy in Beijing.’,
