The National Assembly is expected to process next year’s budget proposal within today’s legal deadline.
Floor leader Kim Byung-gi of the Democratic Party and floor leader Song Eon-seok of the People Power Party met at the National Assembly this morning and agreed to process the 2026 budget proposal and accompanying tax-related bills.
The ruling and opposition parties agreed to reduce the government’s original proposal by 4.3 trillion won, while refraining from making cuts to key national projects of the Lee Jae-myung administration.

“The issuance of local love gift certificates, the People’s Growth Fund, and other key national projects will not be cut, but support for AI, policy fund reserves, and others will be partially reduced.”
In addition, they agreed that increases would be made within the scope of the cuts, ensuring that total expenditures do not exceed the government’s proposal of 728 trillion won.

“Budgets will be increased for projects such as the construction of the National Information Resources Management Agency’s disaster recovery system, the promotion of the distributed power grid industry, and AI mobility demonstration projects.”
The budget increase plan also includes support for urban gas supply pipe installation, national scholarships, and the honor allowance for veterans.
The agreed budget proposal is set to be processed in the plenary session scheduled at 4 p.m. today.
If the budget proposal is processed as scheduled today, it will be the first time in five years since 2020 that it is processed within the legal deadline.
