In a statement made at a meeting held at the Democratic Party’s headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, on the 14th, Park Chan-dae, the chief campaign manager of the Democratic Party’s permanent election campaign committee, urged Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae to respond promptly to the public’s demands for an apology and resignation over the judicial coup.
During the campaign meeting, Park noted, “When the Supreme Court justices themselves do not adhere to the law, how can the public trust the judiciary?” He criticized the justices for foregoing their attendance at the legislative judiciary committee’s hearing concerning the alleged Supreme Court interference in the presidential election, citing past customs as their reason. Park questioned how they would then justify the rapid overturn of the Democratic Party candidate, Lee Jae-myung’s case within nine days, ignoring previous customs.
Park strongly warned the Supreme Court led by Cho Hee-dae, that failure to attend the hearing and respond to public demands could lead to an unavoidable national investigation or special probe, emphasizing that this was not an empty threat and cautioning against testing the public’s patience further.
He declared that the Democratic Party would focus all its efforts on restoring democracy compromised by the judicial coup and pledged to hold those responsible accountable through the powers of the National Assembly.
Furthermore, Park asserted that the court, which released Yoon Suk-yeol, accused in cases of rebellion incitement, on an unusual basis, should immediately re-arrest him to resolve the situation properly.
He also called upon acting President and Deputy Prime Minister Lee Ju-ho to commit full effort to the fair management of elections and to recommend the Special Prosecutor candidate already approved by the National Assembly, as well as appoint an investigator from the Corruption Investigation Office.
Park emphasized the need to clearly distinguish between actions that should or should not be taken, warning against the appointment of partisans in public institutions by acting presidents who succeeded the previous insurgent leaders, and advised against following the same path as the three previous power holders who betrayed the public.
