North Korea has reacted strongly against the recent maritime exercises conducted by South Korea, the United States, and Japan in international waters south of Jeju Island. They have threatened that “any provocation or threat from hostile countries will face an overwhelming and decisive response.”
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) commented today (the 25th) with an article titled “The U.S. ‘Might is Right’ Policy Does Not Work in Our National Security Realm” stating that the maritime exercises carried out for four consecutive days by a group of various military aircraft have escalated the already tense regional political and military situation to an extreme.
The commentary noted that this exercise was the first Korea-U.S.-Japan maritime exercise of the year and the first under the Trump administration, conducted alongside the Korea-U.S. combined exercise “Freedom Shield” (FS). It criticized the United States and its hostile forces for their unprecedented adventurous antics to dominate the Asia-Pacific region.
Furthermore, they evaluated the Trump administration, stating that while it has overturned previous administrations’ policies and executive orders as if flipping a main card, it persistently continues its hostile policy toward North Korea, ambitiously attempting to expand a multi-purpose war gamble on the Korean Peninsula and the region.
They warned that as the U.S.’s anti-North Korea confrontation frenzy intensifies, their efforts and actions to protect national security and regional peace will be accelerated and doubled.
The Korean, American, and Japanese navies conducted a joint maritime exercise with the U.S. Navy’s 1st Carrier Strike Group aircraft carrier, the USS Carl Vinson, from the 17th to the 20th in international waters south of Jeju Island.
The Korea-U.S.-Japan maritime exercise involving the U.S. aircraft carrier is the first since the “Freedom Edge” trilateral training in mid-November last year, and the first since the inauguration of the second Trump administration.
