Lee Jun-seok, the leader of the Reform New Party, spoke at the ‘Gather in Gyeonggi-do, 2026 Local Election Victory Resolution Meeting’ held at the National Assembly Members’ Office on the 23rd.
On December 1st, Lee Jun-seok stated that “the separation from former President Yoon Seok-yeol is not a variable but a constant” regarding the internal controversy within the People Power Party over the apology issue ahead of the one-year anniversary of the December 3 Martial Law Incident.
At the Supreme Council meeting of the National Assembly on this day, Lee urged, “The People Power Party should quickly resolve its relationship with former President Yoon and end the low-level internal hegemony fights. Only then will the public’s attention turn to the innovation competition within the opposition parties.”
Regarding the People Power Party’s Audit Committee’s initiation of an investigation at the end of last month into the ‘Party Members’ Board Incident,’ which raised suspicions involving the family of former representative Han Dong-hoon, Lee criticized, “It’s regrettable. Even if there are some flaws now, those who clearly opposed the martial law back then made the right choice in the broader sense.”
The Party Members’ Board Incident refers to the suspicion that former representative Han’s family was involved in defamatory posts about former President Yoon and his wife on the People Power Party’s board last November.
Lee also noted that this incident is similar to the case in which Kim Hye-kyung, wife of President Lee Jae-myung, was identified as the Twitter account owner ‘Hye Kyung-gung Kim’ that defamed then-President Moon Jae-in during the 2018 local elections.
He further claimed that “it’s akin to the level of people who, in the so-called Hye Kyung-gung Kim incident, insulted the late President Roh Moo-hyun, hurt the hearts of Sewol ferry victims’ families, and insulted former President Moon and First Lady Kim Jung-sook behind their backs.”
Cheon Ha-ram, the Reform New Party’s floor leader, also asserted, “During the martial law, not only did the ruling party fail to prevent the martial law itself but also Yoon Seok-yeol’s self-righteousness and unilateral actions. They should apologize for this.” He urged that “it is natural to sever ties with former President Yoon, and we must actively reject and condemn any future unconstitutional martial law or destruction of the constitution.”
