Leader Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party of Korea expressed that he feels “sorry to the point of wanting to die” ahead of his wife Kim Hye-kyung’s first trial verdict for violating the Public Official Election Act on the 14th.
On this day, Lee posted on his Facebook a piece titled “Wife Heading to Court,” stating that “retaliation began in earnest after losing the presidential election.”
He claimed, “Unlike my common sense that even local gangsters wouldn’t target families, my wife and children became attack targets,” and added that an “indefinite target investigation mobilizing nearly a hundred prosecutors over several years continued.”
He continued, “Although she might have somewhat anticipated a tough future watching her husband engaged in human rights and civic movements amid hardship, she would never have imagined that she would be publicly humiliated under the watchful eyes of the world,” asserting that he has neither sought after others’ belongings nor relied on unfairness in his life.
Lee lamented, “After repeated and persistent long-term scrutiny, luckily our children escaped the clutches, but my wife became a sacrificial lamb,” adding that “it’s unbearable to see my wife, who lived her life cautiously and even checked and returned gifts of value, being called for public summons, investigations, and court trials, from a husband’s perspective.”
He also stated, “Smiling brightly as if nothing’s wrong so her already struggling husband won’t worry more, how shameful, unfair, and difficult it must be,” adding, “Seeing my wife preparing early for trials makes me breathless.”
The Suwon District Court’s 13th Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Park Jeong-ho) is set to deliver the verdict at 2 p.m. today for Kim, who was indicted for allegedly providing meals worth a total of 104,000 won to three former and current National Assembly members’ spouses and her staff including a driver at a restaurant in Seoul on August 2, 2021.
