“Lee Jae-myung, Absorbing Conservatives”… Kim Sang-wook Publicly Supports Lee, Calling Him “The Most Conservative Candidate”

Independent lawmaker Kim Sang-wook, who left the People Power Party with the intention of following “the path of democratic conservatism,” publicly declared his support for Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party, on the 15th. Kim stated that even by conservative standards, Lee is the most suitable candidate for the 21st presidency, claiming he possesses the ability and will to address national challenges and propose agendas for national integration beyond factionalism. This public expression of support from an incumbent conservative lawmaker is seen as potentially accelerating the trend of increasing support for Lee among conservative figures in the wake of the “impeachment situation.”

During a press conference held at the National Assembly, Kim emphasized that failing to elect a competent president could threaten the nation’s very existence, stressing the need for a successful leader who transcends political factions. He highlighted Lee’s administrative and policy achievements, such as his tenure as mayor of Seongnam and governor of Gyeonggi Province, his efforts to push for commercial law amendments, and his systematic response to the 12/3 emergency martial law incident.

Despite identifying himself as a traditional conservative, Kim chose to support Lee over the reformist new party candidate Lee Jun-seok, arguing that his decision was based on ability rather than factional loyalty. He explained that while Jun-seok is a valuable figure for the future, Lee possesses the necessary experience to tackle current national issues.

While supporting Lee’s presidential bid, Kim urged caution against over-consolidation of power should the Democratic Party, already holding a majority in the legislature, gain executive power as well. He stressed the importance of maintaining checks and balances between the executive and legislative branches and warned against the dangers of becoming complacent within one’s support base.

In response to Kim’s support, Lee Jae-myung welcomed the endorsement and expressed the desire for Kim to officially join the Democratic Party, while critiquing the traditional positioning of political parties in Korea. Lee asserted that true political realignment is needed, observing that the Democratic Party is more accurately a progressive party, while the People Power Party has falsely claimed the mantle of conservatism.

The increase in conservative support for Lee Jae-myung comes amid political shifts following the implementation of emergency martial law on December 3 and “impeachment situation.” For instance, on the previous day, various support groups for Hong Jun-pyo publicly declared their backing for Lee, prioritizing economic revitalization over ideological divides. Additionally, former high-profile conservative figures, such as Yun Yeo-jun and former lawmakers loyal to Yoo Seung-min, have taken on roles within the Democratic Party’s campaign structures.

Political commentator Park Sang-byeong interpreted these moves as signs of the People Power Party’s internal disintegration following a coup attempt by former President Yoon Seok-youl, predicting further shifts of conservative figures away from the party.
