Kweon Seong-dong, the floor leader of the People Power Party, stated on the 13th, regarding the ‘Rebellion Special Prosecutor Act’ proposed by the Democratic Party of Korea, “This is an attempt to make the entire nation a potential subject of investigation. We absolutely cannot accept this.”
During a parliamentary meeting held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, on the same day, Kweon argued that the special prosecutor act is essentially establishing another prosecutor’s office under the Democratic Party, adding, “It is evident that all 108 of our party’s lawmakers will become targets of investigation. This act aims to scrutinize the calls, messages, and KakaoTalk contents of ordinary citizens under the guise of investigating rebellion propaganda and incitement charges.”
He further criticized the investigation into foreign exchange crimes as a serious problem, questioning, “How can loudspeakers and leaflets directed towards North Korea be subjects of foreign exchange crime investigations? This echoes the absurd excuse by Kim Jong-un’s regime claiming that North Korean provocations were due to provocation by the South Korean government.”
Kweon claimed that investigating inter-Korean relations as foreign exchange crimes aligns with Kim Jong-un’s “hostile two-state theory,” criticizing it as exposing Lee Jae-myung’s dangerous stance and identity regarding North Korea.
He highlighted the rapid legislation process, stating, “It’s proof of hasty legislation that the rebellion and foreign exchange special prosecutor act was introduced just one day after the rebellion special prosecutor act was rejected in the National Assembly, and passed by the Legislative and Judiciary Committee within a week. The Democratic Party is destroying the constitution with its obsession with impeachment and special prosecutor acts.”
Additionally, he acknowledged the necessity to resolve various controversies surrounding the investigation of the martial law situation, including warrantless investigations by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials and the execution of illegal arrest warrants, stating, “We will gather opinions on the principle-consistent martial law special prosecutor act and explore alternatives for orderly investigations.”
Previously, the rebellion special prosecutor act, which included the investigation of foreign exchange crimes concerning President Yoon Seok-youl, passed the National Assembly’s Legislative and Judiciary Committee led by the opposition party amid the People Power Party members’ walkout. The Democratic Party plans to address the rebellion special prosecutor act at the National Assembly plenary session no later than the 16th.
