The leader of the Democratic Party, Jeong Cheong-rae, stated on the 5th, “Regarding the local elections, I will thoroughly manage the nomination process from the party leader to ensure that no irregularities or suspicions arise.”
In the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Chairman Jeong said, “We have established a Clean Election Secret Inspector Team and appointed Assemblyman Lee Sang-sik, a former police officer, as the leader.”
He further mentioned, “We will select undisclosed personnel by city and provincial party to monitor the entire process related to local election nominations,” and continued, “We will operate this in conjunction with a nomination complaint system.”
He added, “The worst decision during an election is to make no decision,” emphasizing, “If any unfortunate incidents are reported through the Secret Inspector Team and the nomination complaint system, I will immediately take emergency disciplinary action using swift and zero-tolerance principles, instead of waiting for the Ethics Committee’s judgment.”
Meanwhile, regarding the investigation target of the special prosecution on the Unification Church, Jeong said, “The People Power Party keeps hinting that we should exclude Shincheonji (in connection with religion-politics collusion suspicions), but why exclude it? The more the People Power Party wants to exclude Shincheonji, the more the Democratic Party feels it must be included.”
He also urged, “I hope the Speaker of the National Assembly will cooperate in convening a plenary session to address the second comprehensive special prosecution and the Unification Church special prosecution.”
