Jeong Cheong-rae: “The Special Committee on Prosecution, Media, and Judicial Reform will be activated… It will sweep like a storm.”

Min Hyung-bae, Choi Min-hee, and Baek Hye-ryun Appointed as Chairpersons of Special Committee on Prosecution, Media, and Judicial Reform

Jeong Cheong-rae, the new leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced at his first public Supreme Council meeting on the 4th that “the prosecution reform, media reform, and judicial reform will be carried out like a storm and finished swiftly.”

At the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly today (4th), Jeong stated, “We will protect the constitutional order of the Republic of Korea with reforms that meet the public’s expectations.” The Democratic Party announced the immediate activation of a special committee for prosecution, media, and judicial reform, appointing Min Hyung-bae, Choi Min-hee, and Baek Hye-ryun as committee chairs.

Jeong expressed confidence, saying, “If the special committee determines the direction for comprehensive reforms and progresses accordingly, I believe we can fulfill our promise to complete the reforms before the upcoming Chuseok holiday.”

Regarding his election as party leader at the recent convention, Jeong said, “This is a mandate from the people and party members for a strong Democratic Party capable of executing robust reforms, one that will not compromise with rebellious forces and will fully support the success of the Lee Jae-myung government.”

He further emphasized unity, saying, “We will become a ‘one-team’ party, government, and presidential office to foster recovery and growth in Korea. We aim to be a reliable partner and a unified entity with the Lee Jae-myung government.”

He also stated the party’s dedication to leading efforts in economic recovery, ensuring it is felt in the everyday lives of people, and to seeking a peaceful path, restoring inter-Korean relations, and ensuring a peaceful environment on the Korean Peninsula.

Meanwhile, Jeong addressed internal party discussions related to strengthening the standards for major shareholders subject to capital gains tax on stocks. He stressed that “publicly discussing this issue within the party seems inappropriate,” urging members to refrain from making public statements on the matter after this point.

Earlier, the government announced a tax reform proposal on July 31 to lower the threshold for major shareholders subject to stock capital gains tax from the current 5 billion KRW to 1 billion KRW. Following the announcement, there was upheaval in the stock market, and a petition opposing the tax reform gathered over 120,000 signatures on the National Assembly’s public consent petition board.
