Jeong Cheong-rae Proposes Amendment to Constitutional Court Act for National Assembly to Request Dissolution of Unconstitutional Parties

“Representative Jeong Cheong-rae of the Democratic Party of Korea announced today that he has proposed a ‘Partial Amendment to the Constitutional Court Act’ in the National Assembly. This amendment allows for the request for a judgment on the dissolution of unconstitutional parties to be made through a resolution of the National Assembly.

The bill aims to expand the scope of the party dissolution judgment request, which is currently granted only to the government, to include requests made through a resolution by the National Assembly plenary session.

Candidate Jeong explained the legislative intent by stating, ‘The constitution and laws guarantee the judgment on party dissolution for parties that infringe upon democratic basic order. To reflect the will of the people that parties committing undemocratic or unconstitutional acts such as colluding with insurrection should undergo a dissolution judgment, the National Assembly should also have the right to request a party dissolution judgment.’

He further emphasized that ‘eradicating insurrectionist forces sends a clear message of constitutional safeguarding, and a fitting political verdict is needed for political forces that undermine democracy.’

He continued by stating, ‘I am the qualified candidate to be a strong party leader for victory in the fight against insurrection, and I will faithfully fulfill the role of the chief commander defending President Lee Jae-myung.'”
