Jeong Cheong-rae: “Constitutional complaint initiated based on leadership’s opinion… We will continue to push forward with reforms.”

“The Democratic Party of Korea has decided to propose a bill related to the so-called ‘fourth trial,’ known as the ‘trial petition,’ as an opinion of the leadership.

Democratic Party leader Jeong Cheong-rae stated at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly today (20th) that ‘the trial petition is indeed part of the Democratic Party’s judicial reform plan,’ and clarified this stance.

Previously, Democratic Party floor leader Kim Byung-gi mentioned in a press conference at the National Assembly yesterday that ‘(The bill related to the trial petition) will not be proposed as a party platform nor through the Judicial Reform Special Committee.’

However, Jeong clarified, ‘The fact that it was excluded from the Special Committee does not mean it was excluded from the judicial reform plan,’ adding that ‘Discussions on the issue of the trial petition in the Special Committee were not completed due to physical constraints such as the Chuseok holiday. It will be proposed as a legislative initiative based on the party leadership’s opinion.’

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party’s Judicial Reform Special Committee is set to announce a judicial reform proposal today, focusing on increasing the number of Supreme Court justices.

Jeong stated, ‘We will continue to pedal the reforms,’ and ‘We are preparing follow-up actions to complete the three main reforms.’
