The foreign ministers of South Korea, the United States, and Japan met in Brussels, Belgium, just a day after the U.S. announced reciprocal tariffs.
Jo Tae-yeol, South Korea’s Foreign Minister, who is visiting Brussels for the NATO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya at the NATO headquarters on the 3rd local time to discuss cooperation strategies.
This marks the second meeting of the three ministers since the Trump administration’s second term, following their meeting at the Munich Security Conference in February.
Coincidentally, this meeting occurred the day after the Trump administration’s announcement of reciprocal tariffs, suggesting that the South Korean and Japanese ministers might have raised related issues.
President Trump had announced the previous day that the U.S. would impose reciprocal tariffs of 25% and 24% on South Korea and Japan, respectively. However, there was confusion as the annex to the executive order released by the White House listed 26% for South Korea.
After this meeting, the three countries are coordinating the release of a joint statement reiterating concerns about North Korea-Russia military cooperation related to the Ukraine war.
