Five opposition parties launch a roundtable meeting… Discussion on follow-up measures to the martial law situation expected.

On the 19th, five opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, are set to launch the ‘Roundtable for Ending Rebellion and Protecting Democratic Constitution for a New Republic of Korea,’ signaling the start of their activities. The representatives from the Democratic Party, the Homeland Innovation Party, the Progressive Party, the Basic Income Party, and the Social Democratic Party will hold a joint declaration ceremony at the National Assembly. This declaration will outline their goals, such as ending internal conflict, reforming political, social, and power institutions, and reviving the public economy.

Kim Bo-hyup, the spokesperson for the Innovation Party, stated during a press conference at the National Assembly the previous day, “With an overwhelming majority, we will thwart the minority’s rebellious forces such as the People Power Party. We aim to end the insurrection, uphold democratic constitutionalism, and lay the foundation for a new Republic of Korea.”

The opposition is expected to discuss follow-up measures related to the emergency martial law incident on December 3rd through this roundtable. Detailed reform tasks, such as introducing a runoff voting system for presidential elections or easing the requirements for negotiating groups, are also anticipated to be discussed in practice.

The proposal for the opposition’s roundtable was first made by the Homeland Innovation Party on the 2nd, and the discussion gained momentum after the Democratic Party, being the largest party in the National Assembly, accepted it. Subsequently, Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, emphasized in a speech to the National Assembly negotiation group on the 10th, “We will form a ‘Civic Protection Coalition’ and stand together against ‘forces that destroy constitutionalism.'” This led to further discussions and the eventual launch of the roundtable on the stated date.
