Choi Min-hee, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea and Chair of the National Assembly’s Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee, spoke at a press conference on the party’s special committee for media reform’s announcement on the ‘Eradication Plan for False and Manipulated Information’ at the National Assembly on the 20th. Representative Choi Min-hee apologized on the 20th for holding her daughter’s wedding in the National Assembly on the 18th, during the parliamentary audit period. She stated, “If it were my usual style, I would have carefully checked and instructed not to receive wreaths or anything like that, but this happened because I didn’t have time.”
At the Communications and Media Subcommittee’s audit meeting in the National Assembly, Choi responded to a related comment from Park Jung-hoon, a member of the People Power Party, by saying, “I will be more careful,” and apologized.
Representative Park mentioned, “It’s unimaginable to hold a child’s wedding in the National Assembly during a parliamentary audit period,” and pointed out that “a wreath was sent from agencies and companies related to the committee.” He added, “An online invitation was circulated to the audited agencies with a credit card payment link, which sparked public outrage. Though it was removed later, it was highly inappropriate.”
Representative Park further commented, “Typically, politicians invite only acquaintances to weddings or indicate on the invitation that wreaths and congratulatory money are declined,” adding, “If she had considered how this would be perceived by the public, she wouldn’t have made such a decision.”
Choi explained, “Every household has a different atmosphere, and who leads the wedding differs,” and continued, “Since we don’t live together, and because my daughter led everything, I forgot the date even when she told me. She requested me to definitely attend and stay until the end.”
Choi shared that her daughter advised her not to forget her wedding was the next day and even reminded her to wash and dry her hair the day before. She said, “My daughter knew I was going for a site inspection in Gwangju the day before the wedding and was worried I might show up looking disheveled, as usual.”
Furthermore, Choi stated, “If you observe my inquiries, you’ll understand that as a liberal arts major, studying quantum mechanics is keeping me up at night,” and added, “I’ve been diligently memorizing quantum mechanics, cryptography, and secure communication every day,” before expressing, “I’m truly sorry for not being able to pay attention to household matters or my daughter’s wedding.”
