Six opposition parties, excluding the Reforms New Party, have submitted an impeachment motion against Chairman Lee Jin-seok of the Korea Communications Commission. They are scheduled to report it at today’s plenary session.

At today’s plenary session, contentious bills such as the ‘Emergency Relief Fund of 250,000 won for All Citizens’ and the ‘Yellow Envelope Law’ will also be presented. The People Power Party has stated that they will confront these bills with unlimited debate.

This is a report by reporter Kim Bo-dam.

[Report]

Six opposition parties, excluding the Reforms New Party, have decided to propose an impeachment motion against Chairman Lee Jin-seok of the Korea Communications Commission. They claim that the appointment of this chairman and two standing members alone to decide on the appointment of public broadcasting directors was illegal.

[Park Chan-dae/Democratic Party Floor Leader: “Chairman Lee Jin-seok appointed KBS and VOA directors in an illegal 2-person composition as soon as he was appointed. This is a clear and blatant attempt to control broadcasting illegally…”]

Democratic Party members of the ICT Committee have also lodged a complaint with the police over allegations that the chairman misused a corporate credit card while serving as the president of Daejeon MBC in the past.

The People Power Party criticized the opposition parties’ move to pursue the chairman’s impeachment just one day after his appointment as “an abuse of state affairs and unjust impeachment.”

[Han Dong-hoon/People Power Party Leader: “Is it possible for someone to commit such a heinous act that they should be impeached in just one day? They have trivialized the constitutional institution of impeachment as a political gimmick.”]

If the impeachment motion proposed by the opposition parties is reported at the plenary session this afternoon, the vote is expected to be held tomorrow (2nd) or the day after tomorrow (3rd).

The opposition parties plan to present the so-called ‘Emergency Relief Fund of 250,000 won for All Citizens’ and the ‘Yellow Envelope Law’ at this plenary session, but the ruling party plans to counter them with unlimited debate.

The confrontation between the ruling and opposition parties over the exclusive presentation of bills and unlimited debate is expected to continue until the last day of the July extraordinary session, which is the day after tomorrow (3rd).
