Kim Kwang-myung, Sung Hyun-dal, Jung Tae-sook, and Cho Sang-jin, who are city council members in Nam-gu, Busan, have begun a hunger strike on the 5th to oppose the appointment of Ma Eun-hyuk as a Constitutional Court judge nominee. This move is seen as providing support for Representative Park Soo-young of the People Power Party, who is currently staging an indefinite hunger strike at the National Assembly main building.
According to the city council, they started the hunger strike at 2 PM in front of the briefing room on the 3rd floor of the Busan City Council. This protest is meant to strongly oppose the unilateral push for Ma’s appointment without bipartisan agreement, especially in the context where Choi Sang-mok, who is acting as the President and also serving as the Minister of Economy and Finance, must decide on the appointment.
Council member Kim stated, “Constitutional Court judges must prioritize political neutrality and fairness, yet candidate Ma is not free from ideological bias controversies,” and added, “A unilateral appointment without bipartisan agreement undermines the spirit of the Constitution.”
Additionally, council members Sung Hyun-dal, Jung Tae-sook, and Cho Sang-jin emphasized, “The appointment of a Constitutional Court judge without bipartisan agreement cannot be tolerated,” and urged, “Acting President Choi must immediately declare that Ma’s appointment is unacceptable.”
They plan to continue their hunger strike until Acting President Choi declares a policy against Ma’s appointment.
