Acting President Choi Sang-mok, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance, is expected to exercise his veto power against the ‘Amendment to the Broadcasting and Communications Commission Act,’ which was passed solely by the opposition parties. This would be his ninth exercise of veto power.
According to a government official on the 17th, Acting President Choi is leaning towards exercising the veto at the upcoming regular Cabinet meeting on the 18th regarding the amendment to the Broadcasting and Communications Commission Act.
The amendment specifies that the minimum quorum for a meeting should be three members, and decisions are to be made by a majority of attending members.
The amendment, led by the Democratic Party of Korea and other opposition parties, passed in the National Assembly on the 27th of last month and was sent to the government on the 7th, with the deadline for processing being the 22nd.
The People Power Party has requested Acting President Choi to exercise the veto, arguing that “while maintaining a two-member system for the commission, changing the quorum to three or more is an intention to paralyze its operations.”
