Today, as the highest temperatures were recorded across the country, it is expected that the temperatures will rise even higher tomorrow, reaching the peak of the heat wave.
The relentless heat that has persisted throughout this week is forecasted to ease over the weekend with the arrival of rain.
This is Kim Minkyung’s report.

While clouds passed through the northern and southern parts of the Korean Peninsula, South Korea has been experiencing clear skies.
[Gongsangmin / Meteorological Administration Forecaster: Strong sunshine continues during the day within the high-pressure system, maintaining the warm air. South of the high-pressure system, warm and humid air currents are flowing towards Korea, raising the temperatures.]
For the past four days in Yeongnam, and three days in Jeonnam and some areas of Gyeonggi, a heat wave warning has been in effect continuously.
Daily high temperatures have been increasing, with new record highs set today including 36.9 degrees in Uiryung, 36.2 degrees in Gwangju and Jeongseon, 36.1 degrees in Gumi, and 32.8 degrees in Seoul.
[Kim Chaemi / Daejeon Daejeok-gu: The weather is so hot, I’m sweating a lot…]
[Hong Suhyun / Ansan, Gyeonggi-do: It’s so hot, I thought about bringing an umbrella but didn’t, it’s tough because of the heat.]
Air pollutants emitted from vehicles react with sunlight to produce ozone. Due to strong sunshine during the day, the ozone levels have increased, leading to ozone warnings being issued in Seoul, Gyeonggi, some areas of Honam, and Yeongnam.
For the second consecutive day, early tropical nights have appeared in the East Sea region, resulting in a slight relief from the heat. Daytime temperatures in Gangneung and Sokcho dropped by around 5 to 8 degrees compared to yesterday.
[I Won-gil / Meteorological Administration Official: With the center of the high-pressure system located over the Korean Peninsula, the winds have weakened slightly and the ‘warm advection effect’ over the mountains has decreased. This is also due to the winds blowing from the sea during the day.]
It is expected that the peak of this week’s hot weather will be reached tomorrow. As the high-pressure system centered over the Korean Peninsula moves southeastward, stronger southwest winds are expected to blow over Korea due to the country being on the edge of the high-pressure system.
Tomorrow, Seoul’s daytime high temperature is expected to reach 33 degrees, setting a new record for this summer. Gumi will reach 35 degrees, Daegu and Daejeon 34 degrees, Gwangju 33 degrees, and Gangneung 32 degrees.
The intense heat that has persisted throughout this week is expected to slightly ease as rain falls across the country over the weekend.
