Netflix’s Korean original series ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 did not make it to the nominations for this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, the most prestigious TV awards in the United States.
On the 15th, the American Television Academy announced the nominees for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. This year’s Emmy Awards consider works released between June 1 of last year and May 31 of this year.
Released worldwide on December 26 last year, ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 did not make it to the major category nominee lists, such as for Drama Series.
Three years ago, in 2022, ‘Squid Game’ Season 1 was nominated in 14 categories, including Drama Series, Directing, Writing, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor/Actress, setting a record for the most nominations for a foreign language drama in the history of the Emmys. That year, it won in six categories, including Best Director (Hwang Dong-hyuk) and Best Actor (Lee Jung-jae), Guest Actor (Lee Yoo-mi), Visual Effects, Stunt Performance, and Production Design.
There were high expectations that ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 would also be nominated in several categories this year, but it did not happen.
This year’s Emmy nominations for Drama Series included eight works: Disney’s Star Wars series ‘Andor,’ Netflix’s ‘The Diplomat,’ HBO Max’s ‘The Last of Us,’ ‘The White Lotus,’ Hulu’s ‘The Bear,’ Apple TV+’s ‘Severance,’ and others.
Local media reported that ‘Squid Game’ was not nominated despite its widespread popularity. Forbes mentioned, “Despite record-breaking viewership, ‘Squid Game’ failed to get an Emmy nomination,” describing it as a disappointing result for a show that won six Emmys for its first season.
Some media outlets analyzed that ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 and Season 3 are essentially one story like ‘Part 2,’ but Season 2 ended abruptly in the middle, not receiving high marks for completeness.
However, there is a prediction that Season 3, eligible for next year’s awards, might be nominated.
Meanwhile, the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards will be held on September 14.
