The National Heritage Administration to Establish AI Task Force… “Enhancing AI Policies and Services”

Existing National Heritage Industry Promotion Team Abolished…Preparation for ‘Digital Cultural Heritage Center’

(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Ye-na – As AI technology becomes widely used across society, a dedicated team will be established in the national heritage sector.

The National Heritage Administration announced on the 15th that it will introduce a partial amendment to the ‘Regulations on the Organization of the National Heritage Administration and Its Affiliated Institutions,’ with a primary focus on the creation of the ‘National Heritage AI Strategy Team.’

The National Heritage AI Strategy Team will be responsible for the overall AI policy related to national heritage.

According to the amendment, the ‘National Heritage Industry Promotion Team,’ which previously handled tasks such as industry promotion linked to national heritage and job creation, will be abolished and replaced with the new team.

The National Heritage Administration outlined the key tasks of the National Heritage AI Strategy Team, which include establishing and coordinating policies for the digital transformation of national heritage, as well as formulating comprehensive plans for the preservation, management, and utilization of digital national heritage.

The National Heritage AI Strategy Team will also be in charge of the construction and operations of the ‘Digital Cultural Heritage Center.’

The National Heritage Administration plans to collaborate with the Multifunctional Administrative City Construction Agency to build and open the National Digital Cultural Heritage Center in the National Museum Complex in Sejong City by 2024.

The dedicated team is expected to examine how various cultural heritage records and materials can be utilized as digital content, and prepare for various projects to promote their collection, development, and use.

The AI-based national heritage policy is a key goal recently pursued by the National Heritage Administration.

Since taking office in July, National Heritage Administrator Heo Min has repeatedly expressed his intention to establish a digital-based management system to preserve national heritage safely and permanently in the era of ‘AI Korea.’

A budget of 4.4 billion won has been secured for next year to develop intelligent advanced preservation technology (R&D) applying AI technology, and customized AI expert interpretation services and a national heritage terminology dictionary are also being prepared.
