National Heritage Administration announces recognition of ‘Mang-geon-jang’ by Jeon Yeong-in as a national intangible cultural heritage.

The Cultural Heritage Administration announced today (14th) plans to recognize Jeon Young-in as the holder of the mantua-maker title for making three generations of mantuas and continuing the tradition of traditional craftsmanship.

Jeon has been weaving and making mantuas for about 37 years following in the footsteps of his grandmother, the honored mantua holder, and his mother, Kang Jeon-hyang, the mantua holder.

A mantua is a headband worn on the forehead by men in the Joseon Dynasty to keep their hair from falling down before wearing a hat, usually made by hand-weaving thin horsehair and using a thin needle.

The Cultural Heritage Administration explained, “We have confirmed Jeon’s skills in key functions of mantua-making such as weaving and hanging tassels.”

After gathering opinions from various experts, the Cultural Heritage Administration plans to finalize the recognition of the holder after deliberation by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee.
