Mild late autumn weather expected until the weekend… Temperatures to drop by over 10 degrees next week.

Weather Forecast Aftermath: Temperatures to Plummet Post-Rain

On the 14th, the Korea Meteorological Administration held a regular forecast briefing, announcing that starting Friday, rain accompanied by thunder and lightning will occur in various parts of the country through the weekend. Cold continental high pressure from the north is expected to expand, leading to a significant temperature drop after the rain.

According to the briefing, unsettled atmospheric conditions due to the presence of high and low-pressure systems to the north of the Korean Peninsula will lead to the development of pressure troughs, causing rain across regions. Starting on the 16th, rain currently focused on Jeju is expected to begin in the northern areas of the central region as the high-pressure system moves eastward. On the 17th, significant precipitation or snow may fall in the Gangwon Yeongdong region due to the interaction of cold continental high pressure and moist easterly winds.

The expected rainfall from the 14th to the 15th is as follows: less than 5mm in the Seoul metropolitan area (5~20mm in the 5 West Sea Islands), less than 5mm in Gangwon Yeongseo, around 5mm in Chungcheong, 5~10mm in Jeolla and Gyeongbuk (around 5mm in Daegu and Gyeongbuk), and 10~60mm in Jeju. The type of precipitation expected next Monday (the 18th) may change depending on the location and strength where the cold air and easterly winds meet.

Following the rain, the temperature in most areas is expected to fall significantly to around 10 degrees Celsius. Temperatures that had been 3-8 degrees higher than average will drop sharply due to the expanding cold continental high pressure later this week but are expected to rebound to normal levels by mid-next week. The predicted nationwide temperature for the day is a low of 5-13 degrees and a high of 16-21 degrees.

An official from the Korea Meteorological Administration mentioned that the minimum temperature on the morning of the 18th is expected to drop by about 10 degrees from the previous day, possibly bringing subzero temperatures to inland areas. Frost or ice might form, and high waves at sea could lead to the issuance of marine gale warnings. However, regarding a cold wave warning, the official explained that despite a drop of over 10 degrees, a cold wave warning might not be issued if temperatures do not fall to 3 degrees below the average, urging caution due to the rapid temperature change to maintain health.

A cold wave warning is issued when certain criteria are met: a morning low temperature more than 10 degrees lower than the previous day down to 3 degrees or below, a forecasted temperature 3 degrees below the seasonal average, or expected continued subzero temperatures of below -12 degrees Celsius for more than two days, indicating significant potential damage from rapid cold conditions.
