On the 17th, a ‘WIPO International Copyright Protection and Enforcement Symposium’ will be hosted in Vietnam sharing Korea’s experience and laws and systems in the field of copyright protection and enforcement with the world. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that the event will take place in Hanoi, Vietnam from the 17th to the 21st, with the participation and support of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director-General Darren Tang, Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture (Minister Unguyen Van Hiek), the Korea Copyright Protection Agency (Director Park Jeong-ryul), and the World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
This symposium is part of various support programs for developing countries that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism carries out in collaboration with WIPO. It expands on the ‘Copyright Protection and Enforcement Officer Meeting’ held twice in 2019 and 2023. At the event, international experts and over 30 public and private experts from 15 countries will discuss and share information on key issues related to copyright protection and enforcement in the digital environment.
With the participation of copyright policy experts, judges, prosecutors, and lawyers from 10 Asian countries, the Middle East (Jordan), Central and South America (Brazil, Mexico), and Africa (Kenya, Zimbabwe), it is anticipated that discussions on international cooperation based on the various situations of each region and country will take place.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has prepared for Korean experts from various fields to share Korea’s rich experiences and legal systems related to copyright protection and enforcement at this event. Various topics such as Korean government policies on copyright protection, the economic contribution of the creative industry, Korea Copyright Protection Agency’s activities related to online monitoring systems, the development status of copyright-related case law in Korea, and future challenges related to copyright protection and enforcement will be covered.
The ministry established the WIPO Trust Fund in 2006 to support developing countries in the copyright field and in 2014 set up an additional trust fund focusing on copyright protection and enforcement to improve the global copyright protection environment and raise awareness. The ministry hopes that through this symposium, various collaboration systems can be established between governments, public and private sectors, and among private sectors by sharing effective experiences in copyright protection and enforcement and discussing joint response measures.
