▲ On the morning of the 1st, a fire broke out at the National Hangeul Museum in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, and officials are transporting cultural assets taken from the storage room.
Yesterday (the 1st), a decision was made to transfer all artifacts held by the National Hangeul Museum affected by a significant fire to different museums.
The National Hangeul Museum announced that “all artifacts currently in the first-floor storage will be moved and distributed to the National Museum of Korea and the National Folk Museum.”
The museum manages approximately 89,000 items related to Hangeul documents and materials.
Among these, nine items, including “Worinseokbo Volume 9 and Volume 10” and “King Jeongjo’s Hangeul Correspondence,” are designated as treasures, and four items including “Samganghaengsildo” are designated as provincial tangible cultural properties.
So far, it appears that no artifacts have been damaged or burned.
The storage where the artifacts were kept had a separate air control system in operation. Following the fire, the museum relocated 257 major artifacts to the nearby National Museum of Korea storage as a precautionary measure.
It is expected to take about a month to relocate nearly 90,000 artifacts.
