(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Jae-young – A cold front hit on Monday.
On the morning of the 18th, temperatures across most regions dropped over 10 degrees compared to the previous day, staying below zero except for coastal areas.
The temperature drop was more pronounced in regions like Gangwon, Chungbuk, Gyeongsang inland, and Jeonbuk inland, where it fell by about 15 degrees compared to the previous day. In northern Gyeonggi, Gangwon inland, Gangwon mountainous areas, and eastern Jeonbuk, morning temperatures dropped to below minus 5 degrees.
In places like Seoul, where the morning low recorded minus 0.7 degrees, temperatures fell to the lowest this fall.
Gangwon’s Daegwallyeong recorded minus 6.1 degrees, Cheorwon minus 5.6 degrees, Paju in Gyeonggi minus 4.5 degrees, and Chungju in Chungbuk minus 4.0 degrees.
At 8 a.m., major city temperatures were as follows: Seoul 0.2 degrees, Incheon 0.8 degrees, Daejeon 1.2 degrees, Gwangju 3.5 degrees, Daegu 3.2 degrees, Ulsan 3.4 degrees, and Busan 5.1 degrees.
Daytime highs will remain between 6 and 13 degrees.
Nationwide gusts reaching around 55 km/h (15 m/s) are expected, making the cold feel harsher.
Cold wave warnings have been issued in various inland areas, including Jinan, Muju, and Jangsu in Jeonbuk.
This cold spell, caused by cold air moving in from the north, will persist until the 19th, afterward subsiding as temperatures rise to normal or slightly above average levels by the 20th.
Rain is expected intermittently from the afternoon to night in Ulleungdo, Dokdo, and along the eastern coast of Gyeongsang.
This is due to rain clouds developed over the East Sea being carried by easterly winds. As the easterly winds weaken, the rain cloud would move in for a short time, leading to small accumulations: 5–20 mm in Ulleungdo and Dokdo, and less than 5 mm and 1 mm in the east coast of Gyeongbuk and Ulsan, respectively.
Sea conditions will also be poor.
Strong wind advisories are in effect for the West Sea, the East Sea, the far southern seas, and the seas around Jeju (except for the southern coastal front), with winds blowing 35–75 km/h (10–21 m/s) and waves reaching 1.5–5.0 meters until the 19th.
Wave heights in the far southern West Sea, the Middle East Sea, the northern far South Sea, the southwesterly off Jeju’s coastal front, and the southern farout sea around Jeju will exceed 5 meters.
Additionally, the inner southeastern far southern sea of Jeju and the outer southeastern part of the southern sea will see waves exceeding 5 meters from the morning, with the southern part of the southern sea from the afternoon, so caution is advised.
Until the 19th, the strong lunar pull will increase tidal heights, and swells will cause high waves along the East Coast.
