BMW to Unveil Latest ‘Panoramic iDrive’ at CES 2025 for the First Time

**Latest BMW Operating System Based on Operating System X**
– **New Displays and Vehicle Control Concepts Applied**
– **To be Installed in New BMW Models from the End of This Year**

BMW announced on the 8th that it will unveil the “BMW Panoramic iDrive” for the first time worldwide at “CES 2025,” held in Las Vegas, USA, until the 11th.

The new BMW iDrive system is designed around “BMW Panoramic Vision,” a newly developed head-up display concept by BMW. It features innovative displays and vehicle control concepts that interact organically. The latest operating system “BMW Operating System X” acts as an intelligent hub, operating new displays and vehicle control concepts.

The BMW Panoramic iDrive will be gradually applied to all new BMW models, starting with the BMW Neue Klasse models set for production at the end of this year.

Frank Weber, a board member and head of technology development at BMW Group, stated, “The new BMW Panoramic iDrive, which combines advanced technology and intuitive operation, encapsulates the pioneering research and technological advances achieved by the BMW Group.” He further mentioned, “Based on BMW Operating System X, BMW Panoramic iDrive offers superior functions as an integrated infotainment system and once again sets a standard in the automotive industry in the field of multimodal interaction.”

At this CES 2025, attendees can experience a new version of the BMW iDrive, close to production-ready. The new BMW iDrive offers an intuitive and ergonomic driver-centered control experience unique to BMW with four key technologies.

First, the BMW Panoramic Vision, based on completely new head-up display technology, utilizes the entire front windshield and projects information at a height most suitable for the driver. The driver can customize the content visible on the left and right of the BMW Panoramic Vision using the central display.

The new BMW 3D head-up display provides high visibility and safety by directly showing navigation and autonomous driving information at the driver’s eye level at the top of the BMW Panoramic Vision. Additionally, the BMW 3D head-up display harmonizes with the BMW Panoramic Vision to display content.

The central display, featuring matrix backlight technology, showcases a familiar yet enhanced menu structure. With the QuickSelect function, users can control various features and diverse content appropriately via touch.

Lastly, the new multifunction steering wheel features BMW’s “Shy Tech” technology, emphasizing available functions by illuminating the corresponding button. The steering wheel includes key physical control features, and through embossed surface processing and active haptic feedback, drivers can easily press buttons while keeping their eyes on the road.

At the core of the BMW Panoramic iDrive is the new operating system, the BMW Operating System X. Like BMW Operating System 9, it is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack, developed independently by BMW. It allows for long-term advanced technology usage by introducing new features through updates and upgrades over time.

The enhanced intelligence of BMW Operating System X closely connects BMW Panoramic Vision, BMW 3D head-up display, central display, and multifunction steering wheel, providing an integrated physical and digital experience.

Content personalization features have also been significantly improved. The Panoramic Vision display can be adjusted to suit personal preferences, and driving settings like responsiveness and steering characteristics can be configured according to preference through the Personal Mode of My Mode. Additionally, the background photo, ambient light coloring, and user interface design of the central display can be adjusted as desired, allowing drivers to enjoy a more tailored driving experience.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can be summoned by saying “Hey BMW” or pressing a button on the multifunction steering wheel, offering enhanced natural language processing capabilities with the application of large language models (LLM).

BMW Operating System X continues to support various third-party apps from previous infotainment systems. Currently, the BMW ConnectedDrive Store offers over 60 apps for BMW Operating System 9, including video conferencing services like Zoom, with available apps expected to continue increasing.
