BMW Group Korea has signed a contract with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) to use the ‘Plug and Charge’ (PnC) service. The PnC, developed jointly by BMW and KEPCO as the first in the imported car sector, is a charging technology based on the international standard (ISO 15118) that automatically recognizes vehicle information, allowing user authentication and payment to occur simultaneously when the charging cable is connected to an electric vehicle. This technology simplifies the charging process by eliminating the need for additional procedures such as card tapping.
BMW has received a public key infrastructure (PKI)-based electronic certificate with secure communication technology according to international standards from KEPCO and completed the verification of the PnC service between BMW electric cars and KEPCO’s chargers. The official implementation of the PnC service will begin in early December.
Through this contract, BMW electric vehicles will conveniently be able to use charging services from operators who have agreements with KEPCO and other brands’ PnC chargers. BMW’s PnC is the first in Korea to allow the generation of up to five PnC charging contract certificates, which can later be used to install and use contract certificates from various charging service (eMSP) providers in the vehicle.
