“62% of art organizations concentrated in the capital area… 22 regional art organizations nurtured”

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced today (24th) that it has selected 22 arts organizations through the ‘2024 Regional Representative Arts Organization Support Program’ competition.

The selected arts organizations this time include 11 theater groups, 7 traditional arts groups, and 2 each for dance and classical music.

By region, Chungcheong Province had the most with 8 organizations, followed by 6 in Gyeongsang Province, 3 each in Gyeonggi-Incheon and Gangwon Province, and 2 in Jeolla-Jeju Province.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism plans to provide a total of 10.6 billion won in national and local funding to the selected arts organizations this year.

Through this competition, Ulsan and Geoje in South Gyeongsang Province have established the Ulsan Theater Creation Society and the Geoje Philarmonic Orchestra as they did not have municipal arts groups. Additionally, Chungbuk Province has finally initiated the long-awaited Chungbuk Provincial Theater among the 4 new regional arts organizations.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism stated, “62% of arts organizations are concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area, making it difficult for regional arts organizations to sustain themselves. We will support new projects to serve as a stepping stone for regional arts organizations to become self-sustaining.”
