Yulhee: “I didn’t want to reveal Choi Min-hwan’s visits to establishments… I regret giving up custody” (‘I’m Alone Now’)

[Sports Chosun Online Reporter Lee Ji-hyun] Yulhee, a former member of the group LABOUM, revealed the reason for exposing her ex-husband’s visits to certain establishments a year after their divorce.

On the broadcast of TV Chosun’s ‘Now Alone’ on the 5th, Yulhee appeared and shared why she suddenly revealed Choi Minhwan’s faults on her YouTube channel, as well as the process of proceeding with a lawsuit afterward.

Yulhee explained, “A year before the divorce, the other party had faults, and I thought I could overcome it because we had children, but when I felt I couldn’t, I realized the deep rift between us and decided to divorce for each other’s sake. After that, I was deeply concerned about the children’s issues. Due to the significant economic situation of both my family and in-laws, I transferred custody of the children to their father.”

However, after that, Yulhee was criticized as a mother who left her three young children and she expressed, “I was upset that people’s image of me was different from the reality of my life as a mother. That’s why I decided to appear on ‘Now Alone.’ I wanted to convey that I have never abdicated my responsibility as a mother or abandoned my children.”

Particularly, Yulhee, who exposed her ex-husband Choi Minhwan’s visits to certain establishments, conveyed her complex feelings while saying, “Until now, I didn’t want to talk about it. I really didn’t want to reveal it, more than anyone else.” She further confessed, “It was incredibly difficult for a year after leaving the kids with their father. I had no time to think rationally or learn about divorce-related knowledge. I was just worn out, distressed, not in a sound mind, and felt endlessly scared and small.”

Yulhee shared, “I saw comments like, ‘No matter what, if you had tried to stay sane and sued, this wouldn’t have happened,’ or ‘The kids would have been happy living with their mom’ which led me to regret and reflect a lot. I thought my thinking was short-sighted, and if I had the resources, I wouldn’t have made that choice,” she explained her decision to file a lawsuit to regain custody of her children.

Subsequently, Yulhee sought out a divorce attorney. Yulhee stated, “When I divorced last December, custody went to my ex-husband. The terms of the settlement allowed for occasional and free visitation, with alimony and property division set at zero. We tried to have joint custody, but the court said one side was better, so it went to my ex-husband. But I want to regain custody.”

The lawyer advised, “Since you divorced in December 2023, it’s been less than a year. A claim for compensation is possible within three years of the divorce, and property division is possible within two years. The aftereffects of divorce last about three years. You had three children, lived together for five years, and you should have properly ended that period,” offering guidance.

The lawyer also spoke about the chances of winning custody, saying, “To regain custody, they look at whether you have stable housing, any supplementary caregivers, and the economic situation of the custodian, along with the other parent’s support for child upbringing. The court considers all these factors before making a decision,” indicating the difficulty but also encouraging filing to change custody.

Yulhee stated, “I am trying to gather myself now. I want to handle this as amicably as possible without fighting, but trying seems better than not trying. A year ago, I didn’t even try. Even if it becomes a long fight, I want to bring my children back,” expressing her determination.

Meanwhile, Choi Minhwan and Yulhee got married in 2018 and have a son and twin daughters, but they divorced in December of last year.
