[Sports Chosun Online, Reporter Lee Woo-joo] Yoon Sung-bin, a former national skeleton team member, is facing backlash for comments aimed at the “kangaroo generation.”
Recently, a video titled “Yoon Sung-bin’s Managed Diet and Views on Dating” was posted on Yoon Sung-bin’s YouTube channel.
Yoon Sung-bin went out to eat duck stew with his staff. One staff member, who referred to themselves as part of the “kangaroo generation,” noted, “Nowadays, there are many people in their 30s still living with their parents.” The term “kangaroo generation” refers to adults who, due to economic constraints, continue living with their parents.
When the staff mentioned their inability to live independently due to financial constraints, Yoon Sung-bin questioned, “Is it because you don’t have money? Or is it because you spend too much? Why is there no money when you work? Is it because of the high cost of living?” showing a puzzled expression.
The staff explained, “After paying for rent and living expenses, there’s nothing left,” to which Yoon Sung-bin responded, “You can save on living expenses, right?” These comments shocked the staff, with captions indicating a “controversial statement.”
The staff further explained, “If you earn minimum wage, the monthly salary is 2.3 million KRW, but managing expenses and rent cost 1 million KRW. You have to live on 1.3 million KRW, and after accounting for food and transportation, there’s really not much left.” At last, Yoon Sung-bin acknowledged, “When you’re a newcomer, consider living with your parents for a bit.”
Following the video’s release, criticisms of Yoon Sung-bin’s remarks being thoughtless emerged. Netizens criticized him for lacking a sense of reality, saying, “It’s arrogant to comment without knowing the reality,” and “There are people who win Olympic gold medals and receive life pensions, but there are also ordinary office workers.” In response to the controversy, Yoon Sung-bin’s team deleted the video.
