“Fans of actor Kim Soo-hyun are accusing malicious commenters who spread false information and make malicious slanders.” The Kim Soo-hyun Fan Union (Daum Cafe Eukaris, DC Inside Kim Soo-hyun Gallery) stated on the 22nd, “We are proceeding with criminal charges as individuals unrelated to Kim Soo-hyun continue to spread malicious rumors and damage the actor’s reputation on online communities and social media.”
Attorney Yang Tae-young from the law firm Siwoo, representing the fan union, plans to file a complaint against the malicious commenters at the Seoul Seongbuk Police Station as soon as this week. The fan union claims that the commenters are guilty of defamation under the Information and Communication Network Act.
Unlike defamation, where the victim must file a complaint, defamation allows for a third-party complaint. The fan union stated that not only Korean fans but also the global fan union participated in this complaint.
The fan union said, “This is a voluntary movement to protect the actor’s rights and maintain a healthy fan culture,” and added, “We will not tolerate any character assassination and malicious comments disguised as freedom of expression. There will be no leniency.” They further stated, “We have gathered evidence by collecting materials such as malicious comments, manipulated images, and false posts made online over several months.”
Kim Soo-hyun’s agency, Gold Medalist, also submitted a complaint to investigative authorities on the 15th for allegations of defamation and insult, stating that “(the malicious commenters) have been posting speculative writings and claims not confirmed as facts repeatedly and continuously, damaging the artist’s reputation.” Kim Soo-hyun’s side also filed a lawsuit in the amount of approximately 12 billion won for damages against the late Kim Sae-ron’s family and operators of the YouTube channel Garo Sero Institute.
Meanwhile, Kim Sae-ron’s family claimed through the YouTube channel Garo Sero Institute that Kim Sae-ron was in a relationship with actor Kim Soo-hyun for six years from November 2015 to July 2021, when she was a minor. As evidence, they released a handwritten letter said to have been sent by Kim Soo-hyun to Kim Sae-ron during his military service, and a photo of Kim Soo-hyun kissing Kim Sae-ron on the cheek.
In response, Kim Soo-hyun’s agency stated last month on the 14th, “Kim Soo-hyun dated Kim Sae-ron from the summer of 2019 to the fall of 2020 after she became an adult.” Kim Soo-hyun also held a press conference on the 31st last month, saying, “I did not date the late Kim Sae-ron when she was a minor.”
