“Godfather of Comedy” Jeon Yoo-seong is in critical condition… “He has already left a will with his daughter.”

**Comedian Jeon Yoo-seong in Critical Condition at a Hospital in Jeonju… Hospital Officials Say “This Week Is Critical”**

Jeon Yoo-seong (76), well-known as a father figure in the comedy industry, is confirmed to be in critical condition. He is currently hospitalized in a general hospital in Jeonju. Previously in early July, he underwent a procedure related to pneumothorax and has been readmitted recently due to complications of the same condition.

On the 24th, Kim Hak-rae, chairman of the Korea Broadcasting Comedians Association, personally visited Jeonju to check on him, and it is reported that several junior colleagues who wish to have their final conversations with the senior comedian have been visiting the hospital consecutively.

A fellow comedian who visited Jeon shared under anonymity, “There have been mixed reports about his condition, with some saying he was ‘critical’ and others claiming he was ‘recovering,’ but the truth is, ‘this week is critical.’ The hospital has advised to ‘prepare for what’s to follow.'”

He added, “His consciousness is fluctuating, and it is known that he even left his testament regarding posthumous matters to his only daughter during a moment of lucidity.”

A representative from the Broadcasting Comedians Association stated, “He struggled with the lasting effects of COVID-19 for a long time, and his health rapidly deteriorated this year, leading to multiple hospital admissions and escapes from several crises.”

The Broadcasting Comedians Association has issued an urgent notice, accepting requests from juniors, advising those unable to visit in person to send ‘1-2 minute video messages recorded on their phones.’ This is to compile these messages into a ‘Love for Senior’ video letter with memories shared with Jeon Yoo-seong.

Jeon Yoo-seong played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for Korean comedy and broadening the path for fellow comedians. Having graduated from the theatre department of Seorabeol High School of Art and Seorabeol College of Art, he combined his theatrical sensibility with public entertainment as he stepped into the broadcasting world in the 1970s.

He is renowned for popularizing the term ‘gagman’ on broadcast sets, establishing the status of new-generation comedians with professionalism and pride. This was more than just a change in terminology; it marked a significant turning point in recognizing comedy as a cultural and artistic genre.

Notably, he contributed to the creation and establishment of ‘Gag Concert,’ leading the generational shift in Korean comedy. The open comedy format and team-based creative system paved the way for numerous comedians’ stage experiences and the rise of popular stars.
