On the 29th, Adore issued an official statement saying, “We have decided that it is difficult for us to continue with Daniel as a member of NewJeans and an artist under Adore, and thus we have notified the termination of the exclusive contract today. We also plan to hold legally accountable one of Daniel’s family members and former CEO Min Hee-jin for causing this dispute, Daniel’s departure from NewJeans, and the delay in his return.”

Following this, an Adore representative told several media outlets, “Legal procedures are expected to follow, so it is difficult to speak in detail. However, a contract conflicting with the exclusive contract was signed, or independent entertainment activities were conducted. As the correction was not made within the given period, we notified the termination,” explaining the background to the contract termination. Regarding the amount for penalties and damages, they stated, “It is difficult to disclose the specific amount claimed, but we will follow an already predetermined formula.”

Some speculate that the penalty and compensation for NewJeans could reach 100 billion won. Last month, Attorney An Hee-cheol from law firm DLG appeared on the channel ‘Understanding’ and calculated the penalty for a NewJeans member. As a result, the amount a NewJeans member would have to pay was a staggering 108 billion won. Last year, Adore’s total sales were 111.18 billion won, with an operating profit of 30.85 billion won. Considering that the penalty is calculated based on the direct average monthly sales over 2 years and the remaining contract period, the amount Daniel has to pay was 10.8 billion won multiplied by 54 months, totaling 108 billion won. However, Attorney An also explained, “The court can reduce the penalty if it is unreasonably excessive.”

Previously, all five NewJeans members announced their intentions to continue activities with Adore last month. However, since only four members, excluding Daniel, signed exclusive contracts, attention is focused on whether the group will continue as a four-member team.
