Busungkwon, Suga sparks controversy over drunk driving… Faced with hateful comments after leaving ‘drunk driving warning’

Buseungkwan, sparks controversy with 'alcohol warning' in response to Suga's drunk driving incident [SC Issue]

Seventeen’s Buseungkwan faced backlash from Suga’s fans after leaving an alcohol warning as part of a beer advertisement.

Recently, Buseungkwan posted a beer advertisement photo on his account, saying, “Are you all enjoying the Olympics together? Let’s cheer on the South Korean athletes until the end! Let’s make a video to cheer on our South Korean athletes.”

Along with this, Buseungkwan left a comment saying, “Warning: Excessive drinking can lead to stroke, memory loss, or dementia. Drinking during pregnancy increases the risk of birth defects. Just enjoy everything in moderation.”

According to regulations, alcohol warning messages must be included in liquor advertisements. However, some international fans of BTS speculated that this message was directed at Suga, who has been embroiled in a drunk driving controversy, rather than being a general caution.

Fans left negative comments like “Apologize to Yoongi (Suga’s real name)” and “Stop acting high and mighty,” and some even mentioned the late Moonbin, who was a close friend of Buseungkwan, crossing the line with their hateful comments. In response, Seventeen’s fans are leaving positive comments to clean up Buseungkwan’s SNS account, but the hate comments continue.

Meanwhile, Suga was caught drunk driving in Yongsan-gu on the 6th after drinking alcohol and riding his electric scooter, causing him to fall. Police officers discovered him, smelled alcohol, conducted a sobriety test on the spot, and on the 7th, Seoul Yongsan Police Station booked Suga for violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving).

In response, Suga’s side stated, “After having drinks at a meal, he rode his electric kickboard home,” revealing that his license was revoked and fines were imposed. However, CCTV footage revealed that Suga was indeed riding the electric scooter. Moreover, although Suga stated he had “a glass of beer,” his blood alcohol level at the time of discovery was 0.227%, well above the license revocation level of 0.08%.

Amid accusations of trying to downplay the incident, criticisms have grown, and Seoul Yongsan Police Station plans to summon Suga soon for investigation.

Last September, Suga has been fulfilling his mandatory military service as a social worker in Seoul. Some raised concerns that Suga’s drunk driving violated the regulations requiring him to always maintain a neat appearance and dignity during his service, but the Military Manpower Administration stated that Suga’s drunk driving occurred outside of working hours, so it does not constitute a violation of the regulations.
