Taiwan’s TSMC and Samsung Electronics have reportedly discussed with the UAE and separately about building large semiconductor manufacturing plants in the Middle Eastern Arab Emirates (UAE), according to the US Wall Street Journal./AFP News,
, ‘Taiwan’s global foundry (semiconductor outsourcing) companies TSMC and Samsung Electronics have reportedly discussed with the UAE separately about building large semiconductor manufacturing plants in the Middle Eastern Arab Emirates (UAE). However, there are still numerous technical issues to be resolved for actual construction, and discussions are said to be in the early stages.’,
,
, ‘The US Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 22nd, “Top executives of TSMC and Samsung Electronics recently visited the UAE to discuss the establishment of a factory for chip manufacturing,” and stated, “The total cost of this project, which includes a complex with multiple factories, exceeds $100 billion (approximately 133.6 trillion won).” The funding for the project was initially considered by the UAE side to be led by Mubadala, the UAE sovereign wealth fund. Mubadala is a large sovereign wealth fund with investment assets totaling $300 billion (approximately 400 trillion won as of the end of last year). The goal of this project is to increase global chip production volume and lower chip prices without compromising the profitability of chip manufacturers.’,
,
, ‘However, it is not yet certain whether this project can actually materialize due to technical, political, and other issues. For example, a large amount of purified water is needed in the semiconductor manufacturing process, but obtaining it is not simple, and there is also the issue of securing engineers to work in the UAE. There is also concern about advanced semiconductor technology flowing into China. WSJ reported, “TSMC and Samsung have also discussed with the US government while considering this project,” and stated, “Discussions have been held on granting oversight to the US for chip production and shipment from the UAE.” A spokesperson for the White House National Security Council (NSC) told WSJ, “We have been cooperating extensively with the UAE in advanced technology fields for the past two years, and the partnership is moving in the right direction.”‘,
