The Ministry of Industry: “Fostering as a Key Player in Exporting Data Center Cooling Technologies”

The government has announced plans to foster the export of data center cooling systems, which are growing along with the artificial intelligence (AI) industry.

Industry Minister Ahn Deok-geun visited LG Electronics’ Pyeongtaek chiller factory in the morning today (2nd) to inspect the production line and conveyed this message.

Minister Ahn stated, “We must maintain a solid export growth momentum and prepare to discover export growth engines to achieve our goal of becoming one of the top five exporting nations.”

He further noted, “Data centers are a core infrastructure for AI implementation. The Ministry of Industry has recognized AI semiconductors, power equipment, and cooling systems as three strategic items that can be fostered into next-generation export drivers amidst the global AI boom and has been focusing on providing support. Now the rapidly growing cooling systems, which offer solutions to heat generation issues, should be nurtured as a key export player.”

LG Electronics, visited by Minister Ahn, has achieved domestic market share leadership in the turbo chiller sector of large-capacity cooling systems and ranks fifth in global market share, having secured contracts with major U.S. big tech company data centers.

Chiller technology is seen as having the highest growth potential among data center cooling systems, and immersion cooling technology, which cools servers in special liquids, is also analyzed to have significant growth potential.

The Ministry of Industry projects that the data center cooling market will grow by an average of 13% annually, reaching $17.2 billion by 2030.

Minister Ahn stated, “We will support export insurance for cooling systems such as chillers and precision air conditioning units worth 350 billion won by the end of the year and will fully support strengthening competitiveness by investing 130 billion won in research and development to secure key technologies, such as enhancing cooling system technology, and 18 billion won for immersion cooling demonstrations.”
