“Emergency in Chicken Supply: ‘Decision Made to Import from AI-free Areas in Brazil'”

In light of the import ban on Brazilian chicken due to avian influenza, the government has decided to import chicken from areas in Brazil where the disease has not been detected. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced today (23rd) that they will implement a so-called “regionalization” measure, allowing imports of chicken produced in areas of Brazil unaffected by the high-pathogenic avian influenza.

To facilitate this, they plan to expedite ongoing import risk assessments and administrative procedures. In addition, they assured consumers that they would continuously verify whether the chicken is sourced from unaffected regions and monitor the biosecurity and hygiene management status in Brazil.

Furthermore, they noted that chicken import companies have inventory stocks sufficient for two to three months and encouraged releasing this stock to the market. They also plan to request active cooperation from chicken importers, distributors, and related associations to refrain from raising supply prices.

Additionally, the domestic supply of chicken will be increased. The Ministry stated that by May this year, the chicken supply reached 270 million birds, a 5.2% decrease compared to the same period last year. As a result, they plan to expand domestic production by increasing chick placement by affiliates and removing production period limits for broiler parent stocks.

The Ministry clarified that consumer and wholesale prices for whole chickens remain at levels similar to those before the import ban on Brazilian poultry.
