Consumer Protection Agency: “Contracts for marriage expos can be cancelled within 14 days”

The Korea Consumer Agency has issued a consumer alert regarding the increasing damages caused by marriage expos this year. The agency stated that the number of applications for compensation for damages related to marriage expos received until July this year has increased by 36% compared to a year ago, totaling 140 cases.

The agency emphasized that consumers can demand a refund of the down payment within 14 days of receiving the contract, and even if there is a contractual provision in the business’s terms and conditions rejecting withdrawal of subscription, it is considered invalid.

From the previous year to July this year, a total of over 440 applications for compensation for damages related to marriage expos have been submitted to the Korea Consumer Agency, with the majority of cases involving contractual issues such as refusal of subscription withdrawal and penalty fees upon cancellation.

The agency advised consumers to carefully review the product details, refund conditions, etc., before signing a contract, and recommended using credit card installment payments rather than cash transactions.
