Consumer agency orders Nexon to compensate victims of ‘probability-based items’ with 1.1 billion won.

Compensation of 11 billion won for dispute resolution applicants
Total compensation amount for all users amounts to 21.7 billion won
“Nexon Korea has been ordered to provide Nexon cash that can be refunded in cash to consumers who have suffered damage from the probability-based paid items in the online game ‘MapleStory.”
,
, “The Korea Consumer Agency’s Consumer Dispute Resolution Committee announced on the 14th that it has made this decision regarding a group dispute resolution case related to the manipulation of probability of paid items (Red Cube, Black Cube) in MapleStory. The compensation amount is 3.1% of the Red Cube usage amount and 6.6% of the Black Cube usage amount, totaling about 11 billion won in cash that Nexon must provide to 5,674 resolution applicants (excluding those whose item usage cannot be confirmed).”

, “The committee explained that this decision was made considering Nexon’s arbitrary modification of the probability of probability-based items without properly informing users and receiving correction orders and hefty fines from the Fair Trade Commission. In addition, when calculating the compensation amount, it was explained that in order to encourage voluntary compensation from the operator, Nexon decided to deduct 70% of the amount it voluntarily compensated in May 2021.”
,
, “If Nexon accepts this adjustment decision, it will have the effect of a settlement in court. The committee plans to recommend Nexon to submit a compensation plan, and if Nexon accepts, the same effect of the adjustment decision will be applied to consumers who did not participate in the group dispute resolution. The committee explained that if Nexon compensates all users (approximately 800,000), the estimated compensation amount would reach a maximum of 21.7 billion won since the introduction of the system.”
,
, “Chairman Byun Woong-jae expressed hope that this adjustment decision would serve as a good precedent for protecting the rights of game consumers and achieving substantive remedy. He stated, ‘I hope that Nexon will restore consumers’ trust and contribute even more to the development of the gaming industry in Korea through this group dispute resolution case.’ The committee plans to make individual compensation amounts and decision details available for confirmation on the Consumer Agency website.”
,
, “Earlier this year, the Fair Trade Commission imposed a corrective order and a fine of over 11.6 billion won on Nexon for changing the probability structure to reduce the appearance of popular options with high preferences from Cube options, which were initially set to appear evenly from September 2010. Subsequently, the Consumer Agency launched the recruitment of applicants for group dispute resolution to remedy individual consumers’ losses. As a result, 5,773 applicants were recruited, and the committee decided to initiate the group dispute resolution process. The group dispute resolution process is initiated when 50 or more consumers suffer similar or equal types of damages under the Consumer Basic Act.”
