Busan Port Achieves Handling of 20 Million TEUs of ‘Containers’ in Record Time

Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Kang Joon-seok) announced on the 29th that Busan Port has achieved a container cargo throughput of 20 million TEUs (1 TEU is equivalent to one 20-foot container).

This was achieved about 15 days earlier compared to last year when the port surpassed 20 million TEUs on November 12. It is also the shortest period to reach this milestone since the opening of Busan Port.

When converted to daily figures, this year Busan Port has handled approximately 66,000 20-foot containers (about 6 meters long) per day. If these containers were lined up, the length would reach about 400 km, which is the distance from Busan to Seoul.

Despite uncertain conditions such as the global economic downturn, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Red Sea crisis, logistics disruptions, and oil price volatility, Busan Port has processed more than 20 million TEUs of cargo for eight consecutive years, solidifying its status as a global hub port. The first time it surpassed 20 million TEUs was in 2017 with 20.49 million TEUs processed.

BPA President Kang Joon-seok stated, “Achieving 20 million TEUs in the shortest period even amidst global supply chain disruptions is thanks to close cooperation with our customers. Going forward, we will ensure Busan Port continues to play an important role as a global logistics hub by providing stable logistics services.”

Busan Port processed a 5.4% increase in container cargo compared to the previous year as of September this year. If this trend continues, it is projected that the port will surpass last year’s record of 23.15 million TEUs, marking the highest cargo throughput ever.
