The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency has urged the public to adhere to food poisoning prevention guidelines as the number of norovirus infections has been on the rise recently.
The number of norovirus infection cases, which was 80 in the last week of November last year, has increased every week, reaching 291 last week—a 3.6-fold increase in four weeks.
Notably, children between the ages of 0 and 6, who typically attend daycare centers and kindergartens, accounted for nearly 60% of the cases.
Norovirus, highly contagious, is transmitted through direct contact with an infected person or their secretions, and symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and fever appear within two days.
As infections frequently occur among young children engaged in group activities from winter to early spring, special attention to personal hygiene is necessary in places like daycare centers and kindergartens.
