The Democratic Party’s suspicion of involvement with the Unification Church calls for a “biased special investigation… A full reinvestigation is needed,” says Yeo.

Song Eon-seok, leader of the People Power Party, has strongly criticized the findings of a special investigation suggesting that members of the ruling party received funds from the Unification Church. During a Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly on the 8th, Song urged a complete reinvestigation into allegations that the Democratic Party received illicit funds from the church.

According to a media report, Yoon Young-ho, a former official of the Unification Church’s World Headquarters, testified to the special prosecutor’s team that he delivered tens of millions of won to two senior former and current Democratic Party lawmakers. Yoon’s statement reportedly involves 15 Democratic Party politicians connected to the church’s funds.

Song accused the special prosecutor Min Joong-gi of bias, stating that the investigators swooped in on the People Power Party’s headquarters and even arrested a former party leader. Yet, despite concrete testimonies against the Democratic Party, the investigation remained inactive on their allegations. He expressed concerns about selective investigations, framing them as tools for oppression against the opposition.

Chief Spokesperson Park Sung-hoon of the People Power Party criticized what he termed a “political special investigation” orchestrated by the Democratic Party and President Lee Jae-myung, accusing them of having an ulterior motive to shield themselves while thoroughly investigating the opposition.

Furthermore, National Assembly Justice Committee member Joo Jin-woo announced an intention to criminally charge the investigation team for dereliction of duty and vowed to hold accountable Democratic Party figures allegedly involved in accepting funds from the Unification Church.
