Seoul City will hold a safety inspection meeting this morning (25th) to urgently discuss countermeasures related to the sinkhole (ground subsidence) accident in Myeongil-dong, Gangdong-gu.
The meeting, presided over by Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, is expected to discuss the identification of the accident’s cause, search plans for those buried, and future measures.
Mayor Oh was originally scheduled to visit the CCTV control center in Jung-gu this morning, but it has been reported that he canceled that schedule to focus all efforts on the search and rescue of the missing persons.
Yesterday (24th) at approximately 6:29 PM, a large sinkhole with a diameter and depth of about 20 meters occurred near the intersection by Daemyeong Elementary School in Gangdong-gu.
Due to this accident, a motorcyclist fell into the sinkhole and went missing, while a car driver, who passed through the accident site just before the collapse, was injured and transported to the hospital.
Mayor Oh visited the accident scene at around 9:20 PM yesterday to receive a briefing from officials on the accident’s overview and the measures being taken.
He stated, “We will do our utmost to promptly identify the cause of this incident to prevent such occurrences from repeating.”
