According to the Sokcho Maritime Police on the 14th, a man in his 50s, referred to as A, who was a high-ranking official at the Gyeonggi Province Transportation Training Institute and had supported Lee Jae-myung, the former Gyeonggi Province Governor, during the 2021 Democratic Party presidential primary, drowned at a beach in Gosung, Gangwon Province.

On the 10th, around 12:02 PM, a report was received at the Sokcho Maritime Police Station that a person had fallen into the sea while throwing a net at a beach near Bongho-ri in Ganseong-eup, Gosung-gun. A was reported to be unconscious at the time of the rescue operation. Despite being transferred to a nearby hospital in Sokcho, he eventually passed away. An official from the Sokcho Maritime Police stated, “The water was shallow, preventing coastal rescue teams from approaching, so they had to directly jump into the sea to rescue A,” adding, “At the time of the accident, A was not wearing any safety equipment such as a life jacket.”

The Maritime Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident, suspecting that A entered the sea to throw a net and met with the accident.

According to Gyeonggi Province officials, A worked as a bus driver for the Seongnam FC football club under Seongnam City when Lee Jae-myung was serving as Mayor in 2017. During the 2018 local elections when Lee ran for Gyeonggi Province Governor, A served as the head of the SNS team in Lee’s camp. After Lee’s election as Gyeonggi Province Governor in December 2018, A was appointed as the head of the administrative office at the Gyeonggi Province Transportation Training Institute and worked there for about two years.
