Mayor Choi Min-ho of Sejong City stated today (10th) that he “greatly welcomes” the directive by Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung to review the possibility of relocating the presidential office to Sejong.

During a meeting with reporters today, Mayor Choi said, “From the perspective of Sejong citizens, it is very positive that the move of the presidential office to Sejong is being considered and that a policy direction is being set.”

He further explained, “Creating a presidential residence in the Gwacheon Government Complex or the central district of Sejong City might be difficult, although creating offices is possible. Sejong has the land, legal arrangements are complete, and the budget is secured.”

Emphasizing the need to discuss “when and how quickly” the presidential office will be relocated to Sejong, rather than “whether or not it will be relocated,” he added, “Given the political upheaval, we cannot know when the president will be inaugurated, but once inaugurated, there should be a quick consideration for a residence where they can work and live.”

Mayor Choi also stated, “What Lee Jae-myung said was a correct assessment, and I actively welcome it. I believe the presidential office must come to Sejong.”

Previously, in a recent closed-door expanded executive meeting of the Democratic Party, the leader Lee had asked the related regional lawmakers to assess the current status regarding the relocation of the presidential office to Sejong.

Lee’s comments are interpreted as raising the issue of relocating the presidential office to Sejong in consideration of the possibility of an early presidential election.
