The city of Sejong announced today (8th) that it will support the city of Gangneung in Gangwon Province, which is struggling to secure drinking water due to prolonged drought, by providing 20,000 bottles of 2-liter bottled water. Since the start of weather observation in 1911, Gangneung has recorded the lowest rainfall in 114 years, causing the main water source, Obong Reservoir, to drop to a water storage rate of 13%, leading to a severe shortage of drinking water.
Public institutions in Sejong city are also participating in the water sharing movement. The Sejong City Transportation Corporation plans to donate 1 million KRW to the Sejong Community Chest of Korea specifically for bottled water support, while Sejong Local Food and Sejong Technopark have decided to support bottled water worth 500,000 KRW each.
Ha-gyun Kim, the Deputy Mayor of Administration, stated, “I hope that the bottled water support, which contains the wishes of the residents of Sejong, will help the residents of Gangneung overcome the climate disaster crisis.” He added, “We will cooperate with other local governments to quickly overcome various disasters and crisis situations.”
