“Ensure fair wages with the normalization of prompt medical treatment! Guarantee it! Guarantee it! Guarantee it! Guarantee it!”
Nurses and members of healthcare unions gathered in the hospital lobby.
The pre-announced general strike was preceded by a pre-strike meeting held the day before.
Although pre-strike meetings were held at hospitals across the country, last-minute negotiations between labor and management followed.
Through overnight negotiations, 59 out of 62 medical institutions agreed on wages and collective agreements.
However, Chosun University Hospital proceeded with the strike this morning after the labor committee decided to suspend negotiations.
While the negotiation was suspended at the Honam region rehabilitation hospital, they decided to continue negotiations without immediate strike, and the Nowon Eulji University Hospital plans to extend the negotiation period until the 11th of next month for autonomous negotiations.
Although some limited treatment disruptions seem inevitable, there are observations that the momentum for the strike has weakened.
Most importantly, the long-awaited nursing law passed the threshold of the National Assembly yesterday.
[Tak Yeong-ran / President of the Korean Nurses Association: I believe that the law can be a foundation for establishing a system that can provide legally protected and high-quality nursing services…]
On the other hand, medical groups criticized the nursing law as a harmful law that threatens public health and causes confusion among healthcare professions, leading to the collapse of our country’s healthcare system.
[Im Hyeon-taek / President of the Korean Medical Association: The government’s policy to assign doctors’ responsibilities to nurses is not the healthcare that people desire, but will directly endanger people’s lives…]
The Healthcare Workers’ Union plans to minimize patient discomfort by deploying personnel for essential tasks, even in hospitals that are inevitably going on strike.
